For a long time, no one said a word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I held Emma tighter. She had quieted now, watching me with wide, confused eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vanessa took a step toward me. Her voice was soft, desperate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAdrian\u2026 it\u2019s not what it looks like. There must be something wrong with the camera. Maybe it was edited\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My voice was low. Calm. But it cut through everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I looked her in the eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou pushed her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vanessa flinched as if I had struck her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo. I didn\u2019t\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI saw it, Vanessa. We all saw it. You pushed the stroller toward the stairs. Clara saved her. And then you tried to blame the woman who risked her life to protect my child.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olivia stood beside the television, her phone still in her hand. She looked small, frightened, but she did not step back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI saw her, Dad,\u201d Olivia said quietly. \u201cI was standing by the door. I recorded it because\u2026 because something felt wrong. I didn\u2019t know she would\u2026 I didn\u2019t think she would actually\u2026\u201d Her voice broke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I reached out and squeezed her shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou did the right thing, Olivia. The bravest thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I turned back to Vanessa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was no longer crying. She was watching me carefully, calculating. The frightened act was gone. There was something cold behind her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre you going to call the police?\u201d Vanessa asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question shocked me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre you serious? You tried to murder my baby. Of course I\u2019m calling the police.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vanessa took a breath. She straightened her shoulders. Her expression shifted from guilt to something harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you call the police,\u201d she said, \u201cyou will regret it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I stared at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre you threatening me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am telling you the truth,\u201d Vanessa said. \u201cThere is more to this than you understand. If you ruin my name, I will ruin yours. Everything you care about\u2026 everything you have built\u2026 I will tear it down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I couldn\u2019t believe what I was hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou tried to kill Emma,\u201d I said again, slowly. \u201cYou stood in my house and tried to blame Clara. And now you are threatening me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI did not try to kill her,\u201d Vanessa said. \u201cI would never hurt a child. I did what I did because I had to. And if you give me time to explain\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere is no explanation,\u201d I said. \u201cNot for this. Pack your things. Get out of my house. And if you ever come near my daughters again, I will have you arrested.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vanessa looked at me. Then she looked at Clara. Then at Olivia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She walked past me slowly. Close enough that I could smell her perfume\u2014the same scent I had loved for months. Now it made my stomach turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t over, Adrian,\u201d Vanessa whispered as she passed. \u201cYou think you know the truth. But you only see what they want you to see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She walked up the stairs. Ten minutes later, she came back down with a suitcase. She walked out the front door without looking back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the door clicked shut, the house felt too quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I turned to Clara. She was still standing near the stairs, her hands clasped tightly together. Her eyes were red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cClara,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She looked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am so sorry,\u201d I told her. \u201cI doubted you. I let her speak to you that way. I am so, so sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clara shook her head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou were confused, Mr. Adrian. She is very good at lying. Almost as good as the people who came before her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The way she said it sent a shiver down my spine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clara looked toward the window, toward the driveway where Vanessa\u2019s car had just vanished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVanessa didn\u2019t come here by accident,\u201d Clara said quietly. \u201cSomeone sent her. Someone who knows this family. Someone who has been waiting a very long time to destroy it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
